Tate Modern

In the Easter holidays I went to London and whilst I was there I decided to go to Tate Modern to see there collection displays. I was actually surprised on how much new artwork they had since I recently went, as I didn't think they would change the displays so soon.

I was really excited to see actual pieces of art of Rebecca Horn, as I've never seen any of her work in real life, but I used to do a lot of artist research about her whilst I was studying my foundation degree. Her work is very unusual and I love how she creates items to then take photographs with the item as well as her, as this is the thing I do in my practice. 

Annette Messager artwork was also there and these scary face like sculptures was very inspiring when it came to my practice as they was quite similar to the work I've been recently creating, so it gave me even more ideas for the future.

I was also very surprised to see work by Nam June Paik who was an artist I researched last year in my foundation course. I find his artwork very interesting and modern. In level 5 this is the type of art I want to make as I want to experiment with video art.

Tate Modern was great but my favourite piece in the exhibition was Bill Viola piece Tiny Deaths. This was the first piece of Bill Viola I've seen and it was amazing because it was dramatic and spooked the people who went in and viewed it. I have recently been researching Bill Viola for inspiration for my work as I want to experiment with video art in the future and I love his work as it always gets a reaction from the viewer as I cant explain how scared and confused the viewers was of his work when I was there.

Art related jobs

They are many jobs that are art related, but to get these opportunities you need to live in a city that thrives on artwork, because I live in Skegness when i'm not at university I would more than likely need to move away from home and into a city as the only art related jobs that are going in Skegness are, a painter and decorator or an art teacher.

I did a bit of research of art related jobs that are available now to see if they would be quite easy to find in the future and all I had to do was go onto http://www.indeed.co.uk/ and type in art related jobs and quite a few opportunities popped up. Here are just a few examples that I found around Yorkshire and London but they was a wide range of jobs on the website. 

Because I joined Leeds Visual Art Forum (LVAF) they weekly post jobs that are available in Leeds what will be useful in the future when I want a job after my degree. Below is an example of just one of the job offers that come up on LVAF.

In the future I would love to work in a city, but I would prefer a job maybe as a curator of a gallery or a tutor teaching the arts to mature students as they are what I would be interested in but the jobs above do sound interesting as well. But I suppose I would have to think about it more carefully after my degree and just apply for as many art related jobs as possible as I know its quite competitive to get a job that's art related because of how many people have a Fine Art degree.

Identifying what kind of artist I am

The kind of artist I am 

Throughout the years of studying art my style has changed a lot I find as when I was in six form my teachers told me I was a painter but that was the only thing I could of done as the facilities was very limited and at the time i was never introduced to artist such as Gillian Wearing, Bill Viola and David Hockney who create amazing pieces using a vary of techniques. Even though I only had limited facilities I still wanted to get a reaction from the viewer I never want a person to walk past my pieces, I always want them to at least stop, look and get some reaction from them

After six form I went to study a foundation course in art and design as I felt like I wasn't ready to go to university as I didn't learn much when it comes art and all the different strands they are. Whilst on the course I became more of an mixed media artist but mainly focused on photography because I loved how an image can create such an atmosphere.

After doing my Foundation course I knew I was ready to go to university as I experimented with so many techniques and medias. I came to Leeds College of Art quite open minded ready to push my self when it comes to art but I stayed quite limited in what i was doing in the beginning playing it quite safe because I was around all these artists who I don't know. As I was doing a lot of art that wasn't me as i'm passionate about art that's weird, unusual and stands out but instead I was just creating drawing or paintings.

For a while I was doing work that wasn't me so I decided that I had to start being confident with my work and just produce artwork what I want to create and not care about what anybody thinks.

 After doing work I was actually happy with we was placed in strands and I was placed in the media strand that I wasn't so sure on at first, but now I think it was the best decision, I really enjoy not having any limits as I can do whatever I want in the media strand but my main focus is still photography that's quite unusual and has an era about it. I would defiantly say that I am a media artist as my work is quite technical as i'm always using my laptop or my camera to create my pieces.
I also think i'm an artist that uses themselves a lot to create their artwork like Sarah Lucas and Gillian wearing and a lot of work expresses myself and I think it will keep on doing that down the line of me producing artwork because I feel like I want the viewer to connect to my artwork as well as myself the artist.

I am an media artist that loves to create unusual pieces of artwork that will get a reaction from the viewer who focuses mainly on photography but hopefully in the future soon to be an video artist as well with lots of experimenting.

My Learning Style

Identifying my learning style 

To identify my learning style I went on the website:  http://www.learning-styles-online.com/ 
I had to answer 70 questions and they would score me out of 20 for each style. The styles are visual, social, physical, aural, verbal, solitary and logical and a score closer to 20 means the style is often used in your everyday life.

Obviously by looking at the results I am more of an Visual and Physical person as this reflects my artwork as i'm always creating photographs and using visual material to create collages/ pieces of artwork. For the physical side i am always using my hands and making stuff for my work 

and always on the move to create as much artwork as I possibly can in whatever time frame i am given. In this test my Solitary is also quite high as I scored 9 out of 20 meaning that i tend to prefer to work alone but to me this only counts when I am creating something creative as I find it hard in groups to speak out loud and suggest my own ideas, so because of this i would rather work by myself but if its any other type of activities then i'm happy to work as group or a team. I'm hoping my time at university would boost my confidence so I can finally in the future share my creative ideas and speak confidently with other artists. This is probably the reason why my score of Social is only 6 because I am not that confident when speaking to others.

My lowest scores was Logical at a score of 1 out of 20 and Verbal at a score of 2 out of 20, what is quite shockingly low, but its so true, I really don't enjoy writing about my artwork and all the reasoning behind my concepts, as I don't find it interesting and it takes me ages to do as i'm not good at writing, as my sketchbook tends to take forever as I tend to ignore it and just keep on creating artwork as that is what I love to do. My score for Aural is also quite low because I don't tend to link things with sound, I just listen to music in my spare time. 

At the moment this is quite accurate to my learning style but hopefully with being at university for another two years my confidence will grow and my writing will improve. 

Ephemera

Ephemera was Leeds College of art, Fine art students 2nd year exhibition. This exhibition was at the same venue as the 1st year exhibition where my work was presented. I really thought their show was interesting with a mixture of work from video pieces to paintings to sculptures and every piece was very individual and different what I liked as every artist had their own style.

I was really glad I went to see this exhibition as it was very influential and gave me inspiration for work next year as it was nice to see video pieces. Personally I feel like their show was slightly better than ours because their work looked more professional, but hopefully our work would look as good next year.

LCA 1st Year Fine Art Exhibition
Venue: Studio 24
Opening night: 18th March

For our first year exhibition all fine art students had to submit an A3 size piece of artwork of anything they wanted, so we could create anything or select a previous piece of work as long as it was no bigger than A3 size.

I decided to print this photograph what I made onto A3 glossy paper and submit that for the exhibition as I didn't want to use up all my time making something from scratch, when I still wanted to develop and experiment with the work I was doing at the time and at the time I felt like this was one of my stronger pieces.

 Exhibition 

The exhibition looked professional with everybody's work installed but all the work was so different and didn't really work well together, but it still looked really good. 

The opening night was full of people, with lots of people talking to each other about all the different styles of art that was shown. 

The next day when the exhibition was open there was quite a few people who came in and had a look at the exhibition when I was invigilating for a few hours, so I think for a first year exhibition we all did very well.
